The green is traditionally at a central location and provides an open-air meeting place for the people of a village, for example at times of celebration, or for public ceremonies. May Day festivities are traditionally located at the green, with the Maypole erected at its centre.
The common use of the term village green reflects a perception of a rural, agricultural idyllic past. However the actuality of such locations always has been very wide, and can encompass woodland, moorland, sports grounds, and even — in part — buildings and roads. They may also be positioned far from the centre of the community, especially if the community has moved, or been absorbed into a larger settlement.
A notable example of a village green is that in the village of Finchingfield in Essex, which is said to be "the most photographed village in England." The green dominates the village, and slopes down to a duck pond, and is occasionally flooded after heavy rain. The village of Great Bentley, also in Essex, has the largest village green in the UK at 43 acres.
Some greens that used to be a common or otherwise at the centre of a village have since been swallowed up by a city growing around them. Sometimes they become a city park or a square, and manage to maintain a sense of place. London has several of these: Newington Green, originally a Dissenting village, is one good example, with its church anchoring its north end.
There are two places in the United States called Village Green: Village Green-Green Ridge, Pennsylvania, and Village Green, New York. Some New England towns, along with some areas settled by New Englanders such as the townships in the Connecticut Western Reserve, refer to their town square as a village green.
In Indonesia, especially in Java, a similar place is called Alun-Alun. It is a central part of Javanese village architecture and culture.
The northern part of the province of Drenthe (Netherlands) is also known for its village greens. Zuidlaren is the village with the largest number of village greens in the Netherlands.
For instance, one thing you can always count on is the fact that people are out for number one (themselves), so educate the people in your town about how they can save money by using more energy efficient products.
This will of course help the environment, but will save them money as well.
Just change the angle of your approach.

Although I love Solar and wind tech, a tax credit spread out over 15 years is not going to put money in my pocket.
Tell power companies to give solar rebate credits directly to the consumer, and not there hand picked scammy installers, so you can buy 7K grid tie solar systems for $35,000 instead of $55,000, and when the rebate kicks in it only cost $8,000 and not $28,000 where the ROI is several lifetimes.
It could be better but politics gets in the way..
GO read the tax codes on ECO saving.
You could also create an ethanol program to help subsidize corn farmers' incomes. That way, everyone would have to compete with the energy market when they went grocery shopping!!! It would be great!!!
Sound a little idiotic? Oh wait, those are exactly the things our FEDERAL government is currently up to. Sounds rather pointless.
Firstly, plant some trees in your neighbourhood, then you may involve your friends, colleagues, classmates, in it, and then decide a day in a week or month to plant trees. Dont take much time of them, they might don't like it.
If you are in a school, or college then try to open a society to do so. Run campaigns, or tree plantation operations.
OR
Try one thing if you couldn't do these, try and save plants in your near by.
And plant a tree your every b'day.
Then, get your friends to join in.
Even if it is just you and your friends, the world is being saved!
Believe that you can make people go green. JUST BELIEVE!
CREATE AWARENESS and MAKE SURE YOU LIVE AS GREEN AS YOU CAN AND CONVINCE EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO MAKE CHANGES
It is a FACT that people who don't do anything DO NOT CARE and are lazy!
first u stop using plastic, then make the town stop using plastic
then u plant a tree, then make the whole town plant trees
then u see the whole world going green!!!!!!1111
if you take children in your work , they will drag hundreds of people to help you
good luck though, because people are lazy.
trust me, people will soon join you..
